One of our all-time favourite desserts is strawberry shortcake. Who doesn’t love fresh berries layered together with softly whipped cream and a flaky tea biscuit? A true classic! Sometimes though, it’s fun to switch up classic recipes with slight variations. Nothing too drastic, of course. Just enough of a change to keep your guests thinking: hm, what makes this taste so good? Our suggestions, below.
Spike your whipped cream
Instead of vanilla extract, fold a bit of bourbon into your sweetened whipped cream. The boozy notes of citrus and hints of caramel pair beautifully with strawberries.
Add a little greenery
Did you know that strawberries and tomatoes actually have a very similar flavour profile? Strawberries are a bit sweeter but both have a comparable acidic bite and brightness. These shared characteristics mean that both ingredients have a friend in common: fresh basil. Tear basil leaves and sprinkle on your shortcake. Prepare to be amazed.
Switch up your base
Consider alternatives to the typical tea biscuit. We love the idea of buttery pound cake or a meringue cup for unexpected shortcake bases.
