Q: My kids love cold, sugary treats in the summer (slushies and popsicles are their goto’s). What are some healthy alternatives I can feel good about giving them in the coming months?
A: Lucky for you (and your kids), in-season fruit is sweetest in the summer. That means your little ones won’t even notice that these healthy refreshers are, well, healthy. Our best tip? Keep popsicle sticks and a popsicle mold on hand. That way, you won’t be tempted to give in and buy slushies at the store when your kids are looking for something sweet.
Buying local, in-season berries this summer? Grab extra and freeze ‘em! Whenever your kids are craving convenience store slushies, throw a handful of frozen berries in the blender with some ice and coconut water. Blend and serve with colourful straws!
Fresh Fruit Popsicles
Purée in-season fruit (we like a mixture of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries) in a blender with a bit of yogurt or coconut milk for creaminess. Pour into popsicle molds, finish with popsicle sticks, and stash in the freezer until frozen.
Frozen Banana Pops
Insert a popsicle stick in the bottom of a small banana (if using large bananas, cut them in half ) and dip in yogurt or melted chocolate. Have the kids decorate the bananas with toppings of their choice (shredded coconut and sprinkles are our favourites) before freezing.
Cut chilled watermelon into triangle wedges and make a small slit in the rind with a paring knife. Insert a popsicle stick in the bottom and watch a plate of these fruity snacks disappear!
