April 22 is Earth Day and this year we’re celebrating by considering our food choices and highlighting the best ways to save the planet from the kitchen. Here’s our advice for keeping your culinary adventures as sustainable and environmentally-friendly as possible:
Choosing local ingredients produced in your province (or better yet, just outside the city) means reducing transportation pollution. Many of the producers that make up the Michael-Angelo’s family are located nearby. Bonus: local ingredients tend to be fresher and more delicious, too!
Waste Not, Want Not
Using all of an ingredient cuts down on unnecessary waste. Our favourite use for ingredient odds and ends is homemade stock. Use leftover chicken bones to make chicken stock and vegetable peelings to make a rich, veggie-friendly stock.
Instead of starting from scratch to make a whole new meal, cut down on what your family consumes by re-purposing leftovers whenever possible. Trust us—the challenge is more fun than it is daunting!
Eat Your Vegetables
Filling your plate with vegetables is an easy way to consider the planet because the resources needed to produce meat are much greater. Make multiple vegetable dishes in all colours of the rainbow for a satisfying taste of variety.
