As you may have noticed, our Michael-Angelo’s Mississauga location has recently expanded its offerings to include some fantastic craft beer made right here in Ontario. These brews are all local and high-quality—two traits we love to see in any product!
Every producer sourced by Michael-Angelo’s has a unique story. Today, we’re sharing the story of Great Lakes Brewery, one of our favourite Ontario craft beer producers. To celebrate Father’s Day, we’ll also be doing special tastings of Great Lakes Brewery beer. Don’t miss your chance to bring Dad to our stores for a taste of Ontario’s best!
Father’s Day Weekend sampling schedule:
Friday, June 17th: 3pm-7pm
Saturday, June 18th & Sunday, June 19th: 12pm-4pm
A little about the Brewery…
With a history dating back to 1987 (before it was popular to be a craft brewery in Canada), Great Lakes Brewery remains a fiercely independent, family owned and operated business. Currently located in Toronto, Great Lakes Brewery produces a wide variety of tasty beers, including seasonal ales and premium lagers. The Canadian Brewing awards takes place each year and includes submissions from breweries across Canada. In both 2013 and 2014, Great Lakes Brewery won Canadian Brewery of the Year!
A few of our favourites by Great Lakes Brewery…
Canuck Pale Ale
A west-coast style pale ale, Canuck boasts aromas of grapefruit, mango and pine. This beer pours a deep gold, bordering on burnt orange that produces a tight snowy white head. Soft carbonation leads into a sweet honeyish start before it gives way to more grapefruit, tropical citrus, canned peaches and pine. Light to medium body with a very dry finish.
Food pairing suggestions: Spicy dishes such as curry; grilled meats; fried foods
Pompous Ass English Ale
Pompous Ass is our version of an English Pale Ale. We used an American ale yeast to brighten up the flavour and add our own contemporary blend of hops to ensure that even the most pompous ale drinker does a double take. Notes of black tea and toffee on the nose. This beer pours a copper hue of amber, producing a lasting white head. Light in body and flavour profile.
Food pairing suggestions: Soft cheeses; grilled meats; soups and stews
Sunnyside Session IPA (Seasonal)
With it’s lower ABV, this session IPA is one you can enjoy outside in the sun without ruining your evening plans. Pouring a hazy golden yellow, this unfiltered beer has big notes of citrus on the nose. Lemon is the most prominent followed by pineapple and a touch of grapefruit. Light body, juicy and refreshing, the same aromas make their way onto the palate, which are elevated due to the soft carbonation and mouthfeel. A dry finish with lingering pineapple notes, Sunnyside has all the flavours of a big GLB IPA packaged into a remarkably drinkable session ale.
Food pairing suggestions: Fresh fruits and vegetables; grilled fish; shellfish
